Player retention is one of the key measures of a game’s success. Combining my gaming experience, UI/UX background, and industry research, I've identified several key factors that can make a difference.
Onboarding:
The first 10 seconds decide whether players stay or leave. A clear, simple, and guided tutorial keeps curiosity alive and creates a positive first impression.
Emotion:
Mechanics like timers or random choices can spark emotional ups and downs within short sessions, making the experience more memorable.
Sensory Interaction:
The use of sound, visual effects, and haptic feedback deepens engagement, builds immersion, and reduces the impact of interruptions on flow.
Core Loop:
A single rule and goal can still feel deep when supported by small mechanics. It is easier to sustain flow over time when having clear tasks and concrete objectives.
Creating a continuous play experience.
All four of these elements aim toward the same goal: engaging players and maintaining a smooth, continuous play experience. Flow is critical to retention, and my next step is to explore how to minimize interruptions and extend flow.
